Sony Sales Statistics and Financial Trends Over Time
Sony’s consolidated sales series shows a broad rise from the middle of the 2010s into FY2023, followed by a slightly lower FY2024 total. The figures are consolidated sales, not profit, and the historical accounting basis changes: Sony states that FY2020 onward is presented under IFRS Accounting Standards, while earlier years use the applicable prior basis.
| Fiscal year | Period ended | Consolidated sales |
|---|---|---|
| FY2015 | March 31, 2016 | 8,105.7 billion yen |
| FY2016 | March 31, 2017 | 7,603.3 billion yen |
| FY2017 | March 31, 2018 | 8,544.0 billion yen |
| FY2018 | March 31, 2019 | 8,665.7 billion yen |
| FY2019 | March 31, 2020 | 8,259.9 billion yen |
| FY2020 | March 31, 2021 | 8,998.7 billion yen |
| FY2021 | March 31, 2022 | 9,921.5 billion yen |
| FY2022 | March 31, 2023 | 10,974.4 billion yen |
| FY2023 | March 31, 2024 | 13,020.8 billion yen |
| FY2024 | March 31, 2025 | 12,957.1 billion yen |
Source: Sony Corporate Report 2025. Sony also reports FY2024 sales excluding Financial Services of 12,043.9 billion yen, so consolidated and excluding-Financial-Services measures should not be mixed.
The long series is best read as a sequence of reported fiscal-year totals rather than a single like-for-like operating measure across every year. In particular, the accounting-basis note matters when comparing earlier historical values with the IFRS presentation from FY2020 onward.
Sony Business Segment Statistics: Games, Music and Pictures
Sony’s entertainment businesses are reported as separate segments, with segment sales shown before intersegment transactions are eliminated. The three-year comparison below covers FY2022 through FY2024, each fiscal year ending March 31 of the following calendar year.
| Segment | FY2022 | FY2023 | FY2024 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game & Network Services | 3,644.6 billion yen | 4,267.7 billion yen | 4,670.0 billion yen |

Sony Operating Income Statistics Across Technology and Imaging
Operating income adds a different view from sales because it describes segment profitability before unallocated corporate expenses. Sony’s reported figures show different patterns across Entertainment, Technology & Services, Imaging & Sensing Solutions and Other businesses.
| Segment | FY2022 | FY2023 | FY2024 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entertainment, Technology & Services | 179.5 billion yen | 187.4 billion yen | 190.9 billion yen |
| Imaging & Sensing Solutions | 212.2 billion yen | 193.5 billion yen | 261.1 billion yen |
| Other businesses | 16.8 billion yen | 1.6 billion yen | -18.0 billion yen |
Source: Sony Corporate Report 2025. Segment operating income excludes unallocated corporate expenses; the FY2024 Other figure is an operating loss.
Entertainment, Technology & Services operating income was 179.5 billion yen in FY2022, 187.4 billion yen in FY2023 and 190.9 billion yen in FY2024. Imaging & Sensing Solutions moved from 212.2 billion yen to 193.5 billion yen and then 261.1 billion yen, while Other businesses moved from 16.8 billion yen to 1.6 billion yen and then a negative 18.0 billion yen.
Sony Workforce Statistics by Year, Segment and Geography
Sony’s workforce figures are point-in-time headcounts taken on March 31, rather than average annual employment. The 2026 comparison also reflects the partial spin-off of Financial Services and other structural changes, so it is not a like-for-like operating-workforce trend.
| Date | Sony Group worldwide | ET&S | Japan | Outside Japan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| March 31, 2024 | 113,000 | 38,700 | 57,200 | 55,800 |
| March 31, 2025 | 112,300 | 36,700 | 57,500 | 54,800 |
| March 31, 2026 | 94,900 | 33,100 | 42,300 | 52,600 |
Source: Sony Form 20-F for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026. Sony reports approximately 113,000 employees worldwide on March 31, 2024, approximately 112,300 on March 31, 2025 and approximately 94,900 on March 31, 2026.
ET&S had 38,700 employees in 2024, 36,700 in 2025 and 33,100 in 2026. Regional figures were 57,200 in Japan and 55,800 outside Japan in 2024; 57,500 and 54,800 in 2025; and 42,300 and 52,600 in 2026.
The 2025 headcount includes Financial Services before the later spin-off, while the 2026 headcount is after the partial spin-off and other structural changes. That scope difference is essential when interpreting the apparent change in total and regional workforce.
Sony PlayStation Adoption and Image-Sensor Market Share
Sony’s platform statistics combine an estimated user measure with a cumulative hardware-sales measure. They describe different populations: monthly active users are platform activity, while cumulative PS5 sales are units sold and do not equal current active ownership.
- The combined PS4 and PS5 platform reached 116 million monthly active users in Sony’s FY2023 corporate-report disclosure. This is a worldwide platform-user estimate, not a PS5 hardware-ownership count.
- Cumulative PS5 sales reached 61.7 million units at the reference point stated in Sony’s FY2023 corporate report. The figure is a cumulative worldwide sales disclosure.

Sony also reported image-sensor share by revenue for the global market excluding fingerprint sensors. The historical values are estimates, while the later figures are explicitly a forecast and a company target.
| Period | Image-sensor share by revenue | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 49% | Sony-sourced estimate |
| 2023 | 53% | Sony-sourced estimate |
| 2024 | 58% | Forecast |
| 2025 | 60% | Company target |

Sony Environmental Statistics: Emissions, Energy, Water and Materials
Sony’s FY2024 environmental measures cover the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, but they describe different boundaries. Site emissions and site energy concern operations, while product-use energy is a modeled life-cycle estimate and shipment mass is not unit volume or revenue.
Emissions and energy at Sony sites
Sony manufacturing sites emitted approximately 1.044 million metric tons of CO2e in FY2024, about 5.3% below the FY2020 level. Energy-use CO2 emissions were approximately 0.918 million metric tons CO2e, including fuel used by Sony-owned business vehicles.
PFC and other high-global-warming-potential gas emissions totaled approximately 127,000 metric tons CO2e in FY2024 from semiconductor manufacturing operations, where these gases are linked to cleaning and etching processes.
Sony sites used 30,700 terajoules of energy, including 28,100 terajoules of electricity, and renewable energy represented 600 terajoules of site energy use. These are site-energy inputs and should not be confused with the estimated energy consumed by products in use.

Water, materials and product shipments
Sony withdrew 24.28 million cubic meters of water in FY2024. The total includes well, public, industrial, rainwater and external recycled-water categories.
Sony used 380,000 metric tons of materials, including 60,000 metric tons of reused or recycled materials. It shipped 312,000 metric tons of products, including 129,000 metric tons of televisions.
| FY2024 measure | Reported amount | Scope or definition |
|---|---|---|
| Water withdrawals | 24.28 million m³ | Sony operations |
| Materials used | 380,000 metric tons | Products and operations |
| Reused or recycled materials | 60,000 metric tons | Subset of materials used |
| Products shipped | 312,000 metric tons | Shipment mass |
| Television shipments | 129,000 metric tons | Subset of product shipments |

Estimated product-use energy
Energy used during Sony product use was estimated at 260,000 terajoules in FY2024 worldwide. The estimate includes 81,000 terajoules for televisions and 171,000 terajoules for games, representing modeled product-use energy rather than Sony site energy.
