Samsung Revenue, Profit and Global Business Scale

Samsung Electronics’ consolidated financial results show a large change between 2022 and 2023 in reported sales and operating profit. The figures below are company-reported totals, not estimates of the Samsung brand across unrelated legal entities.

Measure 2022 2023
Consolidated sales KRW 302.2 trillion KRW 258.9 trillion
Operating profit KRW 43.4 trillion KRW 6.6 trillion
Net income Not listed in the supplied comparison KRW 15.5 trillion

The 2022 sales and operating-profit figures appear in the Samsung Electronics Sustainability Report 2024, while the 2023 sales, operating profit and net income are reported in Samsung Electronics Facts & Figures. The periods are reported financial years and should not be read as a like-for-like profitability analysis beyond the stated figures.

Samsung’s 2023 investment measures also describe the scale of its innovation and physical footprint:

  • Samsung Electronics invested KRW 28.3 trillion in R&D in 2023, described as its highest level ever at the time of reporting.
  • Samsung Electronics made KRW 53.1 trillion in strategic facility investments in 2023.
  • The 2023 reporting overview listed 232 total facilities, including regional headquarters, sales offices, manufacturing, procurement, R&D, design and other sites.
  • Samsung Electronics operated in 76 countries in the 2023 reporting overview; this is a footprint count, not a count of subsidiaries or markets.

Samsung’s TV statistics use global market-research estimates attributed by Samsung to Omdia, and the principal market-share measures are based on revenue rather than unit shipments. Samsung reported that it had led the global TV market for 19 consecutive years through 2024, a company statement based on Omdia data.

2024 global TV measure Samsung result Definition
Overall TV market 28.3% Share by revenue
TVs priced above $2,500 49.6% Premium segment share by revenue
Screens 75 inches and larger 28.7% Segment market share
QLED TV market 46.8% Segment market share
OLED TV market 27.3% Segment market share

These estimates and the 19-year leadership claim are reported in Samsung Electronics Marks 19 Consecutive Years as the Global TV Market Leader. Segment definitions matter: premium TVs are sets priced above $2,500, while the large-screen category covers screens 75 inches and above.

Samsung also reported unit outcomes for its display technologies in 2024:

  • Samsung sold 8.34 million QLED TVs worldwide and held an estimated 46.8% of the global QLED TV market.
  • QLED TVs exceeded 10% of total global TV sales for the first time in 2024, although Samsung did not specify an exact global percentage.
  • Samsung sold 1.44 million OLED TVs worldwide and held an estimated 27.3% of the global OLED TV market.
  • Samsung’s OLED TV unit sales increased 42% year over year in 2024, according to the company’s comparison with 2023.

The QLED and OLED unit figures are observed company-reported sales, whereas the market-share percentages are estimates based on market research. They therefore should not be treated as interchangeable measures.

Samsung Employee Statistics by Region, Age and Job Type

At year-end 2023, Samsung Electronics reported 267,860 employees worldwide. Samsung’s definition excludes dispatched partner-company workers, employees on leave, interns and full-time students unless a relevant table specifies otherwise.

Workforce measure Employees Geography or definition
Total employees 267,860 Worldwide, year-end 2023
Outside Korea 147,104 Countries excluding Korea
Korea 120,756 Korea
Non-fixed-term 264,525 Worldwide
Under age 30 72,525 Worldwide
Age 30 to 50 178,532 Worldwide

The employee counts are from Samsung Electronics Facts & Figures. Age groups and employment types follow Samsung’s global disclosure criteria, so they should not be interpreted as a complete demographic census beyond the categories shown.

Samsung also reported these job-type and rank categories for 2023:

  • Development employees numbered 83,729 worldwide.
  • Manufacturing employees numbered 109,722 worldwide.
  • Working-level employees numbered 174,060 worldwide; this category excludes manager and executive levels and includes flexible-work employees.
  • Manager-level employees numbered 92,315 worldwide.

The categories are not mutually interchangeable: development and manufacturing describe job types, while working-level and manager-level describe rank categories.

Samsung Training, Inclusion and Parental-Leave Data

Samsung reported substantial training activity in 2023, with separate averages for employees outside Korea and in Korea. Its facts page reports 9.50 million training sessions, expressed in the underlying table as 950 units of 10,000 cases.

Training measure 2023 result Population or geography
Average training hours 58.2 hours Employees outside Korea
Average training hours 77.5 hours Employees in Korea
Average training hours 68.6 hours women; 66.0 men Samsung Electronics worldwide
Training expenses KRW 209.0 billion Employees in Korea
Training expense per employee KRW 1.731 million Employees in Korea

The training measures and definitions come from Samsung Electronics Facts & Figures. Training hours include online and offline learning, while the Korean expense-per-employee figure is Samsung’s calculation from Korea training expenses and Korea employees.

Inclusion and family-support measures add more context:

  • Samsung reported 4,477 employees on parental leave worldwide in 2023, including 1,304 men and 3,173 women.
  • The return-to-work rate after parental leave was 97.7% for men and 99.0% for women in 2023; these are separate gender-specific rates, not one overall workforce rate.
  • Samsung reported 1,931 employees with disabilities, equal to 1.8% of employees, in 2023.
  • Samsung operated 11 in-house daycare centers with capacity for 2,642 people; capacity is maximum capacity, not enrollment.

Samsung Emissions, Waste and Water-Use Statistics

Samsung’s 2023 environmental data distinguishes estimated Scope 3 emissions from operational measures such as waste recovery and water withdrawal. Scope 3 figures are estimates, and Samsung notes that methods can improve and prior-year data may be revised.

Scope 3 category, 2023 Emissions (thousand tonnes CO2e)
Total Scope 3 107,035
Use of sold products 83,116
Purchased products and services 11,514
Upstream transportation and distribution 4,382
Employee commuting 298

The emissions figures are reported in Samsung Electronics Facts & Figures. “Use of sold products” is the largest listed category, but these estimates are not a direct measure of Samsung’s operational emissions alone.

Samsung also reported 97% of hazardous waste recovered for recycling in 2023, alongside 420,273 tonnes of hazardous waste recovered. Hazardous-waste monitoring follows local-country standards, so the recovery metric should be read as the company’s reported operational measure.

Total water withdrawal was 177,361 thousand tonnes in 2023, of which municipal or surface water accounted for 176,575 thousand tonnes. Water withdrawal is not the same as water consumption, and groundwater is reported separately in Samsung’s water-management table.

The Samsung Electronics Sustainability Report 2024 also reported that Samsung’s DX Division had completed 93.4% renewable-energy transition by the end of 2023, under the scope and calculation used in Samsung’s environmental-strategy reporting.

Samsung Supplier, Community and Compliance Statistics

Samsung’s 2023 supplier and community figures combine network scale, employee participation, youth-program reach and compliance training. The counts use different populations and time bases, so cumulative beneficiaries should not be compared with annual training participants as if they measured the same outcome.

  • The 2024 report overview listed 2,515 suppliers of parts used in manufacturing Samsung products.
  • Samsung recorded 652,677 employee volunteer hours worldwide in 2023.
  • Employees averaged 2.44 volunteer hours each in 2023; this is an average, not a participation rate.
  • Samsung SW·AI Academy for Youth had 8,550 cumulative beneficiaries through 2023.
  • Samsung Dream Class had 124,604 cumulative beneficiaries through 2023.
  • Samsung Stepping Stone of Hope had 27,111 cumulative beneficiaries through 2023.

Samsung also reported broad compliance and supplier-training reach in 2023:

Program or training measure 2023 reach Definition
Compliance training 138,742 people Samsung Electronics
Anti-corruption training 254,511 people Samsung Electronics
Supplier training companies 1,739 companies 1,114 first-tier; 625 sub-suppliers
Supplier training employees 32,566 people 30,417 from first-tier suppliers

All supplier, community and compliance figures in this section are from Samsung Electronics Facts & Figures. Training reach is not a pass rate or effectiveness measure, and supplier participation does not measure supplier quality.
