Streaming Scale and TV Platform Economics

Company filings show the scale of individual streaming businesses, but these measures are not the same as industry-wide revenue or unique viewers. Netflix’s 2024 Form 10-K reports worldwide company metrics for the year ended December 31, 2024.

  • Netflix reported $39.001 billion in streaming revenue in 2024, up 16% from 2023. The figure is company revenue, not the whole streaming industry. Netflix, Inc. 2024 Form 10-K
  • Netflix ended 2024 with 301.626 million paid memberships worldwide, after 41.350 million net additions during the year. Memberships exclude extra-member subaccounts and certain promotions, and net additions are not gross sign-ups. Netflix, Inc. 2024 Form 10-K
  • Netflix averaged 277.730 million paying memberships in 2024, while average monthly revenue per paying membership was $11.70. Neither measure is necessarily a count of unique people or households. Netflix, Inc. 2024 Form 10-K
  • Netflix reported $10.418 billion in operating income and a 27% operating margin in 2024. These are company accounting measures, not industry profit measures. Netflix, Inc. 2024 Form 10-K
Netflix regional membership measure December 31, 2024 Geography and definition
EMEA paid memberships 101.133 million Europe, Middle East and Africa; platform memberships
Asia-Pacific paid memberships 57.541 million Asia-Pacific; platform memberships
Latin America paid memberships 53.327 million Latin America; platform memberships

These regional figures are Netflix’s reporting categories and should not be interpreted as people or household totals. The same filing reported total company revenue of $33.723 billion in 2023 and $31.616 billion in 2022; the 2023 figure included streaming and the then-discontinued DVD business. Nielsen’s The Gauge measures viewing through TV screens in the United States, so its category shares do not cover every form of video use. In July 2024, streaming led the measured categories, while broadcast and cable remained substantial.

U.S. TV-screen viewing category July 1–28, 2024 share Related movement
Streaming 41.4% More than 5% higher than June; share up 1.1 percentage points
Cable 26.7% Cable news viewing up 23% from June
Broadcast 20.3% Viewing up 5% from July 2023

Total U.S. TV usage rose 2.3% from June to July 2024 and was 3.5% higher than in July 2023. Cable news was 52% higher than in July 2023, but that is a subset of cable viewing rather than a measure of all cable. Poland provides a separate national panel example. In January 2024, people aged four and over watched an average of 4 hours 19 minutes per day on the home screen, while streaming represented 7.6% of TV-screen video viewing and increased 8% from December 2023 to January 2024. Connected TV and Smart-TV Adoption Data

UK figures distinguish the TV set, subscription video-on-demand (SVoD), advertising-supported video-on-demand (AVoD), broadcaster video-on-demand (BVoD) and video-sharing platforms. These are in-home viewing and household measures, not interchangeable ownership rates.

  • The TV set accounted for 84% of total UK in-home video viewing in 2023.
  • UK SVoD and AVoD services accounted for 14% of total in-home video viewing and reached 38 minutes per person per day in 2023; viewing grew 6% year over year.
  • Netflix was present in 58% of UK households in Q1 2024. Ofcom estimated that 2.1 million of 16.7 million UK Netflix households used Netflix’s advertising-supported tier, a tier estimate rather than a viewing-time measure.
  • BVoD viewing rose 29% in 2023 to 20 minutes per person per day, and BVoD represented 13% of broadcaster viewing, up from 10% in 2022.

The TV-set share comes from Barb viewing on TV sets and other devices using home Wi-Fi, while the SVoD and AVoD definition excludes some services and unmeasured TV-set use. Media Nations: UK 2024

TV Audience Statistics by Age, Service and Event

Age differences are pronounced in UK in-home video measurement. In 2023, viewers aged 16–24 spent 1 hour 33 minutes per day with video-sharing platforms, which represented 46% of their in-home video time, while video-sharing platforms represented 40% for UK children and less than 10% for groups aged over 54.

Adults aged 25–34 watched 1 hour 5 minutes of SVoD/AVoD per day, equal to 28% of their total in-home video time, in 2023. SVoD/AVoD viewing increased by more than 10% year over year among both UK viewers aged 55–74 and UK children. Media Nations: UK 2024

UK programme or event Audience measure Period and scope
New Year’s Eve fireworks 12.1 million average viewers 2023, BBC One
Happy Valley final episode 12.1 million average viewers 2023, BBC One
Coronation broadcast 12 million average viewers 2023
Euro 2024 final, BBC One 11.4 million average viewers July 14, 2024
Euro 2024 final, ITV1 3.7 million average viewers July 14, 2024

The reported combined Euro 2024 figure was 15.1 million viewers, a transparent sum of the same-day BBC One and ITV1 averages. Ofcom’s comparable combined audience for England’s Euro 2020 final appearance was 21.9 million viewers on July 11, 2021, but event conditions and definitions may differ; out-of-home viewing is excluded or limited in these comparisons. Media Nations: UK 2024

SVoD releases use a different window: Netflix’s Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget averaged 7.5 million UK viewers within 28 days of release in 2023, while Disney+’s Elemental averaged 6.5 million on the same 28-day comparable basis. These are not same-day broadcast audiences. Media Nations: UK 2024

Television Technology, Ownership and Energy Statistics

The U.S. Department of Energy-hosted Fraunhofer presentation combines modeled household energy estimates with model-level television trends. The figures below should not be read as sales-weighted market shares or TV-only electricity totals.

Measure Reported result Scope
Consumer-electronics electricity use 176 TWh U.S., 2020 estimate
Devices covered 3.3 billion U.S., 120 million homes, 2020
Share of U.S. electricity About 4%–5% All consumer electronics, 2020 estimate
Average LCD-TV power density 80% lower 2005–2016 model-year trend
TV model screen size 20% higher 2010–2016 model-year trend

The energy census covers all consumer electronics rather than televisions alone and was modeled using public and industry data, measurements and surveys. The display study averaged power characteristics across more than 9,000 TV models, but the sample was not sales weighted, and the screen-size trend concerns models rather than installed household stock. TV Platform and Content Performance Statistics

Platform accounts and streaming hours describe service activity, not necessarily unique households or people. Roku ended 2023 with 80 million active accounts globally and recorded more than 100 billion streaming hours worldwide during the year. Roku, Inc. Q4 2023 Shareholder Letter filed as Exhibit 99.1

Nielsen’s U.S. content analysis also shows that streaming can rely heavily on older linear-TV programming. In May 2023, 60% of U.S. streaming time was spent on programming that first aired on linear channels, and this share was 5.2% higher than in October 2022. State of Play: Streaming Audiences Spend More Time With Classic TV Than Original Programs

Among U.S. women aged 18–34, 18 of the 25 most-watched streaming programs in 2022 were classic TV titles. Those viewers watched just under 77 billion minutes across the 25 titles, with classic TV accounting for 73% of those minutes. State of Play: Streaming Audiences Spend More Time With Classic TV Than Original Programs

Among U.S. men aged 18–34, 17 of the 25 most-watched streaming titles in 2022 were acquired titles, representing 64% of all minutes across that top-25 group. These ranked-title results describe a subset of streaming activity rather than all viewing by either audience.
